Sunfrolics on location in Nosara Costa Rica.

Sunfrolics on location in Nosara Costa Rica.

A week in Nosara, Costa Rica.

This trip was exactly what the doctor ordered, though I didn't realise how much I needed it at the time. It was my first solo adventure in five years, since before my daughter was born. Whether you're traveling solo or with loved ones, I can guarantee you'll find a heart centred, relaxed place with truly happy vibes.

It's laid back, coastal village on the Nicoya Peninsula that's gained a reputation as a wellness mecca, surf town, and nature haven all in one. There are no massive resorts or chain restaurants, instead you'll find boutique hotels, open air yoga studio's, organic cafe's and dirt roads lined with jungle.

My journey to Costa Rica started with a flight from London Heathrow to Canada Montreal. From there, I connected to San Jose, where I spent a quick overnight before heading straight to Nosara.

For the most time efficient way to get from San Jose to Nosara, consider a small charter flight, it'll get you there in about 40 minutes. I was a bit hesitant at first, but after seeing the alternative drive time, I decided the extra cost was worth saving the hours. It turned out to be a smooth journey with an easy check in, professional pilots, and spectacular views once we were in the air! I flew with Sansa airlines.

Upon arrival at Nosara airport, local tuk tuk drivers were readily available to take me to my hotel. I hadn't pre booked, so I recommend having cash for the fare as they don't accept card payments.

Where To Stay

I stayed at two places, and loved both of them, Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort & The White Palms Nosara.

I went for the yoga and wellness vibes as I was a solo traveller on this trip. I couldn't have picked a better starting point for what I was looking for. Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort is a luxury boutique wellness retreat, seamlessly blending surf, yoga and jungle living. The resort sits within lush tropical foliage, featuring open air yoga shala's and serene meditation spots woven into the greenery. It has a saltwater swimming pool and secluded lounge area's. Guests are enveloped in a peaceful, away from it all vibe. They run daily yoga classes, suited to all different levels and styles. They also have a pilates and spin studio, along with a spa, health cafe and restaurant.

Conveniently located directly across the road, The White Palms Nosara provided a more economical accommodation option, complementing my stay perfectly. I was still able to attend the daily yoga classes on offer at Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort which is also why I chose to this option.

What To Do

Whether your intention is to surf, stretch or simply slow down, Nosara is that place.

Surf the legendary waves at Playa Guiones, with consistent year round swells and a sandy bottom (no reef), it's ideal for everyone, from total beginners to seasoned pro's. Surf schools and board rentals are plentiful, so you'll be carving waves in no time.

Yoga and Wellness, Nosara is one of the top yoga destinations in the world. Join a drop in class at renowned studio's like Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort or Blue Spirit. Meditation, sound healing and holistic therapies are all on offer at different setting's.

Jungle Trails & Wildlife, Nosara is surrounded by protected forest and wildlife corridors. Take a guided hike or nature walk through the Nosara Biological Reserve to spot howler monkeys, iguanas, coatis and vibrant tropical birds. For something more adventurous, try horseback riding at sunset. This company offer's different tours including horse riding, snorkelling and Kayaking : Tico Tours

Shop Local at the Artisian Markets, Nosara has creative soul, and you'll find that reflected in it's local markets and boutiques. Browse handwoven textiles, organic skincare, handmade jewelry and art at places like the Nosara Farmers Market (held weekly).

Where To Eat

Eat, drink and juice your way round Nosara, it's a foodie haven with a healthy twist. Fuel up on organic food, smoothie bowls, ceviche, wood fired pizza's, fresh seafood and Costa Rican coffee. Most people will tell you to go to Coyol up in the hills for one of Nosara's famous sunsets, I unfortunately didn't make it there so I can't give you my personal recommendation. I did have the pleasure of eating ceviche at Sendero , I can confirm chef kisses! It was a beautiful setting in lush, open air environment, with a service that feels personal and warm, it feels effortlessly chic and deeply connected to Nosara's laid back wellness culture as all the meals are local produce, seasonal with high quality ingredients. My other personal recommendation for grocery shopping, kombucha and a deli is Organico.

Cafe's: Sunrise Coffee

What To Pack

I absolutely couldn't leave home without my Sunshine Collection for this trip! The beach bag was an absolute life saver, perfect for all things beach, yoga, markets, shopping and daily essentials. It just screams happy, summer holiday vibes. I even repurposed The Sunshine Toiletry bag as a clutch for lighter outings, holding my phone, keys, lipgloss, sunglasses and ear pods. So relieved that the inside of all of these items are waterproof as I visited during the rainy season.

I was also able to pack my Sunfrolics beach towel as they're super lightweight making it easy to pack and travel with. The hotels provide bathroom towels but not beach towels, it also made a good flight companion when I was feeling cold.

A Perfect Nomad - The Dulce Vida Dress, beautiful organic crinkled cotton. My go to for balmy nights out. Roll it up in your bag with your favourite bikini, eluding sophistication and freedom of movement.

Birkenstock's Arizona Essentials - I only packed Birkenstocks and trainers because comfort is key in Nosara. You'll be doing a lot of walking on dirt roads, and everything is super casual, so leave the heels at home!

Levi Shorts - I wore my shorts most days, couldn't live without them in a warm climate.
